The most foolish mistake we could possibly make would be to permit the conquered Eastern peoples to have arms. History teaches that all conquerors who have allowed their subject races to carry arms have prepared their own downfall by doing so.
-- Adolph Hitler, April 11 1942.
That the said Constitution shall never be construed to authorize Congress to infringe the just liberty of the press or the rights of conscience; or to prevent the people of the United states who are peaceable citizens from keeping their own arms...
-- Samuel Adams, in "Phila. Independent Gazetteer", August 20, 1789
I grew up with guns, I was raised around guns, I was taught how to use them, I knew what they could do to me or anyone else for that matter, I was taught to respect them and I enjoyed them. We had all kinds of guns in our house growing up and I knew where they were, I knew how to access them if I needed to and I knew the brevity of them. I was not afraid of them in any manner. I felt confident enough to defend myself with one, if it was necessary. I watched my brother and dad clean guns every sunday. I have seen my brother build a gun from scratch and make it better than thought imaginable and because of the lessons that I was taught growing up, through going to the shooting range, learning the ins and outs of guns, being around them, being taught to not be afraid of them and instead be comfortable with them, learn what they can do, what they are capable of and have them be a part of my everyday life, I do not fear them. What I fear are the ones that get them, have no idea how to use them and fear them, but yet own one and refuse to learn how to use it properly. I also fear the types of people that acquire guns, people with mental health. It is not the gun that I fear, it is the person carrying that gun, that is the loaded weapon.
At least one weekend a month, me, my brother and my dad would make our way to the gun range and shoot at the range and shoot skeet! I was taught how to shoot pistols, rifles and shotguns. I feel comfortable shooting all of the above still and would feel right at home shooting a semi automatic or automatic gun. I can honestly say that at the gun range were some of the most respectable, well mannered, nicest people. They were honest, hardworking, there for enjoyment, there to teach their family and friends the basics of gun safety and gun control. They were there to relax (yes, shooting a gun can be relaxing. Shooting skeet is the epitome of relaxation...IMO) and they were not insane.
I feel strongly about all of this gun control talk, it is just plain ridiculous. Why in the world does our government think that it is okay to go against our constitution, take away a right that we have had for centuries? It is not okay. Owning a gun is a right of ours and one that we should all take advantage. You should want to protect your family when your house gets broken into. You should want to have your concealed handgun license and use it. You should want to learn how to shoot a gun with efficiency and confidence. GUNS ARE NOT THE BAD GUY. The guy pulling the trigger is the freaking bad guy. We own a gun and I plan on owning more. I plan on owning enough to have a garage full of safes. The rate that our country is going, we are going to need a garage full of them, to defend ourselves from the idiots. I plan on teaching my children how to shoot, what is and is not okay to shoot, how to respect the gun, how to respect what a gun to do, teach them the brevity of guns, teach them about the different types of guns, what is and is not illegal, how to clean them, how to handle them and how to be confident with them but not cocky with them. Guys, this is the problem with our society today, the majority of the people that you hear about in the news with guns and them killing or harming people, those are the people that not only do not respect guns, they do not know how to use them properly, they do not care and they do not care because they were never taught about guns, they have mental issues of some kind (I mean, what sane person would freaking open fire on innocent children in an elementary school or an unsuspecting crowd at a movie theater.....NO SANE PERSON WOULD) and they are looking for their fifteen minutes of fame because they feel inadequate enough to walk into these situations and create it themselves.
I can tell you that I have NEVER had any thoughts of evil doing on anyone or anything in my entire life. I do not grasp why these people that do these kinds of acts (Aurora, Columbine, Newtown etc.) do them. You want to know why I do not understand them? Because I am not them, I am of sound mind, I think rationally, I am not hopped up on drugs, inhalants from some kind of can, glue or whatever else they are on consistently to keep their mental state all messed up. I am a human, I have compassion, I care, I think about others first, I have respect for the human life and the power of a gun.
I feel strongly about this because I can tell you firsthand that if someone comes to get our gun and take it away from us, you will see me on the news and it will be for defending my family from an organization that is all about making us helpless, reliant and incapable of being the humans that God created us to be, ones of confidence, respect and free thinking.
For those of you that do not believe that mental health is the issue and you think guns are the issue and that expressing said opinions is the way to get answers, that is fine, I am not berating you for thinking such a thing or for acting upon such thoughts. That is your RIGHT in our constitution, set forth by our founding fathers to have free speech, just like it is my RIGHT to bear arms in our constitution, set forth by our founding fathers. You take away mine and others rights, prepare to do battle because at some point, something that you are passionate about will be challenged and taken away and then you will know how I and others feel. It will not stop at just the one, once they start, it will keep on. If you think otherwise, you are a sheep, gullable and naive. You give anyone an inch, they will take a mile, I guarantee it.
As the Founding Fathers knew well, a government that does not trust its honest, law-abiding, taxpaying citizens with the means of self-defense is not itself worthy of trust. Laws disarming honest citizens proclaim that the government is the master, not the servant, of the people.
-- Jeff Snyder
Americans have the right and advantage of being armed - unlike the citizens of other countries whose governments are afraid to trust the people with arms.
-- James Madison, The Federalist Papers
"The best we can hope for concerning the people at large is that they be properly armed."
