Now I am sure, in fact, I am 100% positive that you have seen atleast one post pop up on your facebook news feed in regards to 50 shades of grey. Im sure it has been written by a woman that has what is called, 'a mommy blog,' and she has written about this book, a book that she did not read. She probably claimed to read the first few chapters and then couldn't stomach the rest of it. She now claims that she knows what the books are about and is going to proceed to tell you her opinion of them, quote scripture about why these books are sinful and lambast anyone that reads them. Any of you seen a post like this? I know I have, and plenty of them. Frankly, they are ridiculous and are baffling to me as to how these women are considered a legitimate source about the book when they didn't even get past the first few chapters/pages?
Seeing as how I have read the books (which were some of the most amazing books and one of the best love stories ever), I can tell you what they are about, can give you my educated opinion about them, won't quote scripture about how they are 'sinful' or lambast you if you do or do not read them. Each person has the option to read whatever they want. I don't want to be told that I am a sinner for reading something and so therefore, I will not call you a sinner for judging me for reading them (even though, technically I could ;). Personally, for me, I feel that if I close myself off to books because of their content, then I am closing myself to views, knowledge, theories, facts, opinions, other people, events and more, whatever those may be and that is not something that I have ever done nor plan to do. Just because you read something doesn't mean you are going to hell. I think it matters what you do with the information that you have read about, that makes the difference. You can CHOOSE to take what you read to the next level in a good or bad way or you can look at a book as solely that, a book. Nothing more, nothing less. Not over analyzed.
I could tell you what all the books are about and give you details from them, but that wouldn't be fun now would it. That would spoil the books for you ;) I will say however, that they are some of the best books that I have read and they are just that, books. Yes, they have sex scenes in them and yes, some of them are intense. Yes, they have been dubbed, 'mommy porn.' I mean, I guess I can see it? No, I am not someone that watches porn nor cares to; that is just not my thing. What really got me into the books was the story between Christian and Anastasia, in all seriousness. I did not read them looking for porn scenes or ideas for our sex life, we don't need any of that ;)!! I read them because of what I had heard about the underlying plot, the underlying story, you know 'the meat of the book.' And I was not disappointed in anyway shape or form. The Meat of the story was amazing. The story of Christian and Anastasia was by far the best. The psychology behind the man. The naivety (spelling?) behind the girl. The complexities of their relationship. The love story between them. The growth of a messed up man. The growth of an innocent young girl. The makings of a family. It all captivated me, it engrossed me and I couldn't wait to read it each day! Yes, within all of that there was sex. But that wasn't why I read it and that shouldn't be what stops you from reading it. I promise you that there is a genuine story behind all of those scenes and it is totally worth it. Last time I checked, sex wasn't something to balk at...I mean have we regressed to the 50's where it was something to be ashamed of? I don't remember that and nor do I plan on going back to that. Between a man and a woman, sex is a beautiful thing and that is exactly what this is; sex between a man and a woman. Now I am not saying that the type of sex that they consent to is what I like, but, it is what it is and more power to 'em.
So, with all of that, there is my EDUCATED, WELL READ, take on the book. It is my opinion and solely that, but it is one that has been formed AFTER reading the entire book, is not based on 'mommy blogs,' is not a lambasting of those that do or do not read it, it is simply my opinion and my being frustrated at the outcry that this book has received and it seems to be caused by the ones that know nothing about the book or who didn't make it past the first few chapters because they were ashamed of what it was about or embarassed to be caught reading it. It is also me absolutely LOVING a book and this is my book review of it. This is a trilogy that I will read again and feel that the $$ I paid for them was well worth it!
Ladies, be proud of who you are, own what you do and love it! That is something that God gave us and wants us to show: confidence, strength, intelligence, well roundedness, open mindedness and to feel comfortable in giving our opinion and in our own skin. Don't be ashamed to read a book about sex, last time I read the Twilight series, there was sex in it and I don't remember that being spoken about? Im just saying ;) Sex is sex, we all know what it is and for those of us that are married, it is no secret that you have sex with your husband, again, just saying ;)
I loved this book and I think that some of you will too, now I also think that some of you will not and therefore you shouldn't read it and THAT IS OKAY! Not every book is for everyone. I am not here to judge you for reading or not reading something. I am also sure that some of you are going to be offended by this post (not my intention in the least, but, none the less Im sure it will happen. This is my blog and I have the right to write about what I want, aimed at no particular audience. My blog is my outlet).
So, if you end up reading the book, message me, we can discuss it and see who we think will be a good Christian or Ana. I would love to find a non judgmental reader to discuss this book with! Good books deserve good, mature, educated discussions!!
Happy reading and I beg of you not to be offended by this post, this is not directed at anyone (well okay, maybe the 'mommy blogs' that seem to know what they are talking about in regards to this book, even though they have yet to read the books ;).
